THE EXCELLENCE OF AS-SALAAT (The Prayer)

THE EXCELLENCE OF AS-SALAAT (The Prayer)
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha’ (i.e., great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al-Munkar (i.e., disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil, wicked deed).” [Qur'an (29:45)]
AHADITH:
1. Abu Hurairahu (RadiyAllahu Anhu) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (Sallellahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) saying:
“Say, if there were a river at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day, would any soiling remain on him?”
They replied:
“No soiling would be left on him.”
He (S.A.W.S.) said:
“That is the five (obligatory) Salat (prayers). Allah obliterates all sins as a result of performing them.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

COMMENTARY:
This Hadith tells us about the merit and benefits of the performance of the prescribed five daily Salat, performing them will wash off one’s sins, but this is true of only such Salat which is performed in accordance with Sunnah, i.e., punctually in exactly the manner showed by the Prophet (S.A.W.S.), and not of that which is offered at will in one’s own way.
2. Abu Hurairah (RadiyAllahu Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Sallellahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said:
“There are angels who take turns in visiting you by night and by day, and they all assemble at the dawn (Fajr) and the afternoon (Asr) prayers. Those who have spent the night with you, ascend to the heaven and their Rubb, Who knows better about them, asks:
“In what condition did you leave My slaves?”
They reply: “We left them while they were performing Salat and we went to them while they were performing Salat.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
COMMENTARY:
The angels for the night come at the time of Asr when the angels for the morning are present. This is how the angels of the two shifts assemble at this time. The angels of the shift of Asr leave their duty in the morning, and the angels of the morning shift resume their duty when the pious persons are engaged in Fajr prayer. This is how the two groups assemble again at that time. Thus, when the angels come or go, the people who are punctual in their prayer are engaged in Fajr and Asr. Almighty Allah knows everything but even then He asks the angels about his pious slaves so that the piousness of the believers and their merit and distinction become evident to them.

THE WISDOM OF LUQMAN

THE WISDOM OF LUQMAN

THE WISDOM OF LUQMAN
Luqman [the wise] (alaihissalam) is a well-known sage, whose advice to his son has been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Luqman’s sayings and the words of advice he gave to his son, contain rare wisdom, and quite a number of Traditions refer to “Luqman’s advice to his son”.
One of these are: “O my dear son, sit in the company of the Ulema (religious scholars) frequently and listen carefully to what the wise men say, for Allah gives life to the dead hearts by the ‘Nur (light)’ of wisdom, just as He revives the dead earth by heavy life-giving rains.”

They relate that once a stranger passed by Luqman (alaihissalam) while he was sitting among his followers. The man said, addressing Luqman, “Aren’t you the bondsman of such and such tribe.” He replied,” Yes, I was.” The stranger asked again, “Aren’t you the one who used to graze the goats near such and such hill?” Luqman replied, “Yes, I am the same person.” The man then said, “Then what has brought you to this noble position?” Luqman (alaihissalam) replied, “I was very particular about a few things and I observed them on all occasions, viz. Fear of Allah, truthfulness in speech, fulfilling a trust and avoiding useless talk.”
Luqman advised his son, “My son entertain good expectations from Allah without losing fear of His punishment. A fear of His punishment should make you despair of His Mercy.” His son replied, “The heart is one. How can it contain hope and fear at one and the same time?” Luqman (alaihissalam) responded, “A believer is such as if he possessed two hearts: one teeming with hope and the other equally full of fear.”
He exhorts his son to recite “Rebi Aghfirlee” (O my Lord, forgive my sins) frequently. For, there are certain hours during which Allah’s special favors descend upon His men and everybody is granted whatever he asks from Allah.
He says: “My dear son no one can perform good deeds unless he possesses a firm belief in Allah. If a person’s heart is unsound, he is very weak in performing good actions.”
“My dear son, if Satan (the Devil) were to create doubts in your mind, let your firm belief overpower him and silence his whispers; and if he tempts you to be negligent in virtues, defeat him with remembrance of the grave and the Day of Resurrection; if he (the Devil) tempts you towards the joys of this world or makes you afraid of the hardships of this life, say to him, ‘One must inevitably leave this world (neither the luxuries nor the hardships of this life are enduring).’”
He says: “My dear son, he who tells a lie loses the freshness of face, he who cultivates bad habits will ever remain sad; it is far easier to move huge mountains from one place to another than to reform the ignorant stupid.”
He says: “My dear son, abstain from telling lies; for lies soon arouse enmity and hatred for the liar.”
“My dear son, be very particular about attending funeral prayers and avoid attending festivities. For, funerals remind one of the Hereafter and festivities divert One’s attention towards this world.”
“My dear son, do not eat anything, when your stomach is full; it is better to put food before a dog than to overeat.”
“My dear son, don’t be so sweet that people swallow you up, nor so bitter that they spit you out.”
“My dear son, do not be less capable (in devotions) than a roster which starts crowing at early dawn and you be laying asleep in bed.”
“My dear son, don’t delay Taubah (Repentance), for death may take you unaware.”
“My dear son, do not make friends with stupid people, lest you should develop a liking for their foolish talk. And do not incur the enmity of a wise man, lest he should turn away from you in disgust (and you should he deprived of getting the benefit of his wisdom).”
“My dear son, let no one but the pious partake of your food and always consult Ulama (religious scholars) in your affairs.”
Someone asked Luqman (alaihissalam), “Who is the worst of men?” He replied, “The one who does not mind being watched while doing an evil deed.”
He says: “My dear son, associate frequently with the pious for, in this way alone, you can attain to the virtues that they possess. Besides, when Allah’s special favors descend upon these beings you will also be able to receive your share of blessings; for when it rains; showers fall on all sides of the house.”
“My dear son, avoid the company of the wicked people, for no good can be expected to come out of associating with them. Moreover, if at any time, Allah’s punishment befalls them, you will also he affected by it.”
He says: “A father’s punishment is as beneficial for a child as is the water for the fields.”
He says: “My dear son, since the day you were born, everyday, you are getting closer to the Hereafter with your back towards this world. So, your abode in the Hereafter is far nearer to you (because you are advancing towards it everyday, at all times) than your house in this world (because you are moving farther and farther away from it day by day).”
He says, “My dear son, avoid incurring debts; for a debt is a humiliation by day and a grief by night. (One is disgraced when the creditors make demands by day, and one spends the night in grief, worrying about his debts.)”
“My dear son, entertain hopes of mercy from Allah, but let not your hopes make you bold in committing sins; be fearful of Allah but let not your fear make you despair of His mercy.”
“My dear son, if someone comes to you with the complaint that so and so has taken both his eyes and you actually see both his eyes missing, do not form any judgement about the person until you have heard the other side. For, this man might have hit the other person first and taken out four eyes earlier.”
When the last hour came for Luqman, he said to his son, “My dear son, I have given you a lot of advice during my lifetime; now that I am leaving the world, I would like to advise you about six points:
(1) Busy yourself in the affairs of this world to the extent of the remaining period of your life (which is nothing when measured against the eternity of the Akhirah (the Hereafter).
(2) Worship Allah according to the measure of your dependency on Him (and, obviously, one needs His help in everything).
(3) Make preparations for the Hereafter according to the extent of your stay in that world (and, obviously, one shall have to stay there eternally, for there is no other place to go to after death).
(4) Continue to struggle for redemption from Hell-fire till you are sure you have attained it. (It is common knowledge that, if someone is under trial for a grievous offence, he continues to make efforts for his acquittal till he is sure that the case is going be decided in his favor.)
(5) If you have the audacity to indulge in sins, do so to the extent that you can endure Hell-fire (for, punishment of sins is dictated by law and you are never sure whether the Sovereign, however infinite His mercy may he, will grant you mercy petition.)
(6) When you want to commit a sin, look for a hiding place that is not being watched by Allah and His angels (for, everybody knows the consequences of engaging in a revolt before the eyes of the Sovereign Himself or in the presence of his secret agents.)

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 to 4.5.2 Offline Installer

Microsoft .NET Framework is a very important System Framework developed by Microsoft that runs on Microsoft Windows. It includes a large library and provides language interoperability across several programming languages. Programmers produce software by combining their own source code with .NET Framework and other libraries. Microsoft .NET Framework is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform.

Programs written for .NET Framework execute in a software environment (as contrasted to hardware environment), known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR), an application virtual machine that provides services such as security, memory management, and exception handling. The class library and the CLR together constitute .NET Framework. Microsoft .NET Framework's Base Class Library provides user interface, data access, database connectivity, cryptography, web application development, numeric algorithms, and network communications. Microsoft also produces an integrated development environment largely for .NET software called Visual Studio. PROTECT YOUR GAZE! – Inspiring and Touching Story Of Sahabi Talaba Abdul Rahman (RA)

PROTECT YOUR GAZE! –

Inspiring and Touching Story Of Sahabi Talaba Abdul Rahman (RA)

PROTECT YOUR GAZE! – Inspiring and Touching Story Of Sahabi Talaba Abdul Rahman (RA)
Thalaba Ibn Abdul Rahman (RadiyAllahu Anhu) was a young man at the age of 16. He always ran errands for the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). One day while walking though the city of Medina, he passed by a house with an open door. Out of curiosity he took a glance inside. In this glance, he saw a light curtain being blown away from a bathroom entrance were a woman was bathing. He immediately lowered his gaze.
With an extreme feeling of guilt and hypocrisy his mind ran. Thinking to himself, How could I be of the companions? One that is close to the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), one who runs his errands and be so horrible as to disrespect peoples privacy?

He feared that Allah would reveal to the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) evidence of his hypocrisy. His guilt denied him to ever show his face to the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). So he ran away.
Days went by and the prophet kept asking the other companions if they had seen Thalaba. No one had seen him. With the prophet’s (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) worry about Thalaba he sent a few of the companions to look for him everywhere, among them were Omar Ibn Al Khattab and Salman Al Farisiy (RadiyAllahu Anhuma).
They looked everywhere in Medina, and on the out skirts of Madina, until they came about a set of mountains between Mecca and Medina where some nomads where herding sheep. The companions asked the nomads if they had seen a young man with Thalaba’s characteristics. They told the companions about a weeping boy. He had been here for 40 days. He came down from the mountains once a day weeping and drank the milk they would offer him. Then he went back up the mountains weeping, crying, always asking for Allah for forgiveness, and saying words of repentance. So the companions waited until he came down and watched him. He had lost weight. His countenance reflected sorrow as he drank the milk that was mixed with his tears.
The companions insisted that they take him back to the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) but he refused and asked them if Allah had revealed verses saying he was a hypocrite. They told him that they had no knowledge of any such verses. He was taken back to Medina where the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) went to see him. He asked again if Allah had put him among the hypocrites or revealed that he was. The prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) assured him that there were no such verses. He laid out Thalaba’s (RadiyAllahu Anhu) tired, weak body and placed Thalaba’s (RA) head on his lap.
He said: “Oh prophet of Allah remove the head of a sinner away from you.”
The prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) comforted him until he told the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) I feel as though ants are walking between my flesh and bones. The prophet told him it was death and his time had come. He witnessed while Thalaba’s (RA) head was on his lap, Thalaba (RadiyAllahu Anhu) proclaimed, ‘There is no god worthy of worship other than Allah, and that Mohamed (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) is the messenger of Allah.’
The prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) washed Thalaba and carried him to the grave. It is narrated that on their way to bury Thalaba, the prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) walked on his tippy toes as though he were in a crowd. When Omar asked about this, the prophet pbuh explained that he was being crowded with the angels.

Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) First Friday Sermon In Al-Madinah

Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) First Friday Sermon In Al-Madinah

Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) First Friday Sermon In Al-Madinah
The following is a sermon that is mentioned in ibn Al-Qayyim’s famous book Zad Al-Ma’ad (Provisions of the hereafter). This book is one of the important resources of knowledge for those who seek to know the Seerah of their Prophet (Sallellahu alaihi wa sallam) as well as, the Fiqh learned from it. This is a book that is unique in that it explains the Sunnah through the Seerah and the Seerah through the Sunnah.
This sermon was delivered when the prophet (S.A.W.S.) first arrived in Quba / Al-Madinah and before he (S.A.W.S.) built his mosque in Al-Madinah.

Ibn Ishaq reported on the authority of ‘Abdur-Rahman Ibn Ka’b Ibn Malik (r.a.) that he said (part of the narration): “After the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) arrived in Al-Madinah and he stayed In Quba’ on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and he built their mosque, then he left on Friday and time for Friday prayer overtook him in the land of Banu Salim Ibn ‘Awf, and so he prayed in the mosque which was in the middle of the valley before the building of his mosque.
Ibn Ishaq said: “It was the first sermon which he delivered; according to Abu Salamah Ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman (r.a.) – and we seek refuge with Allah from attributing to him anything which he did not say – he (sallellahu alaihi wa sallam) stood up among them and praised Allah and extolled Him, then he said:
*”As for what follows, oh, you people! Send forth for yourselves (good deeds); you know for sure, by Allah, that a person among you will be struck down unconscious and he will leave his sheep without a shepherd, then his Lord will surely say to him – and there will be neither intermediary nor screen between them: “Did not My Messenger come to you and communicate (the Message), and did I not give you wealth and favor you? And what did you send forth for yourself?” And verily, he will look right and left, but he will see nothing; then he will look in front of him and he will see naught but the Hell-fire. So whoever is able to shield his face from the Fire, even if it be only by giving a piece of a date in charity, let him do so; and whoever was unable to do so, let him (shield it) by saying a good word, for the reward of a good deed is multiplied by ten times seven hundred times. And may the Peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you.”*
Ibn Ishaq said: “Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), delivered a second
sermon, saying:
* “All praise and thanks be to Allah, I praise Him and I seek His Aid. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of ourselves and from the wickedness of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, there is none (who) can misguide him and whomsoever Allah sends astray, there is none (who) can guide him. And I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Alone, without partners. The best of speech is the Book of Allah. He whose heart has been beautified with it by Allah and whom He has admitted to the fold of Islam after he had disbelieved will be successful, for he has chosen it (Allah’s Speech) over that of all of mankind. Truly, it is the best of speech and the most eloquent. Love what Allah loves; love Allah with all of your hearts. Do not become tired of Allah’s Speech, nor of mentioning His Name and do not make your hearts hard towards it. Hence, amongst everything that Allah creates He chooses [something]; Allah would call it: His Kheerah (best) in terms of deeds; His favorite ones amongst the servants; that which is good and useful in terms of speech; So worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him and fear Him as He should be feared and be sincere to Allah in the righteous words which pass your lips and love one another with Allah’s Spirit between you. Verily, Allah hates that His Covenant should be broken. And may the Peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you.”*

FIVE WAYS TO STOP BEING JUDGMENTAL

FIVE WAYS TO STOP BEING JUDGMENTAL

FIVE WAYS TO STOP BEING JUDGMENTAL

If that feeling of, “I’m better than thou,” creeps up on you while comparing yourself to someone else, consider the following:

1. Consider the saying, “Some saints have a past and many sinners have a future.”

Being a ‘saint’ isn’t guaranteed for any one person for a lifetime. But the path to God’s forgiveness is always open and especially tailored just for the one who makes a mistake and regrets it and seeks to change, even if it’s over and over and over.

2. Think about our sins and shortcomings.

Oh, wait, can’t think of any? If we can’t, we’ve been deceived by Satan and are in an even worse state than any of those whose blatant sins we perceive.

3. Remember the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “No one with the slightest particle of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” (Bukhari)

Sometimes the actions we see others engaged in may be sins, but may not be as serious as the problem of arrogance. In wanting others to act like they’re people of Paradise, let’s be careful not to make ourselves candidates to be barred from it. May Allah protect us.

4. Ask ourselves: Is that person a parent?

If they are and we aren’t, they’re already light-years ahead of our game. If she’s a mom, Paradise is potentially below her feet. If they are a mom or dad, any good they taught their kid and their kid acts upon are rewards going straight back to them. How are we going to compare ourselves to that? If they are and we are, consider: what great work might their progeny do that may be because of one lesson that person taught them?

5. Remind ourselves: We have no idea what another person has gone through or where they’re really coming from.

How many people were physically beaten in order to make them pray, pressured into wearing hijab, or sexually abused by a “religious” individual? Our minute interactions with individuals are not a gateway to their backgrounds and past struggles. We don’t know the pain they’re working through. And sometimes, due to those very painful experiences, people leave the practice of Islam or leave Islam completely. But then they sometimes choose to come back. And when they do, it will take time. They have to work through their emotions, the toxic relationships which originally caused the schism they experienced with Islam and the difficulty in finding a niche in a community after leaving it for some time. And all of that is jihad. Everyday they are waging internal battles.

What they go through cannot quite be compared with the young man or woman who was raised in a supportively religious household, who was a part of a nurturing mosque community, who was put in Islamic school since kindergarten and taken to Qur’an classes everyday. A twenty-year-old hafith (one who has memorized the entire Qur’an by heart) might be impressive and may God bless them and He has raised their status in a special way. But they may not necessarily be closer to God or earning more rewards from God than the struggling servant who has dealt with incredible hardship and is struggling to come back.

So, what can we do when that ‘holier than thou’ feeling creeps in?

Think: Omar, RadiyAllahu Anhu, used to be a hostile Islamophobe who would beat his servant for her belief in God. Now, he is known to us as one of those promised Paradise by the Prophet ﷺ himself. Would he have been our role model if we knew him before Islam? Maybe not. But look who he became. You know why? Because, by God’s guidance and mercy, he had a teacher and a community who helped him reach his full potential. That’s what we need to be for others and allow others to be for us. Be a loving mentor. Be a supportive friend. Be an encouraging counselor. Be a shoulder to cry and lean on. Your awesome love for Islam and “Muslimness” will be communicated simply through your actions of being there for others in an uplifting, genuine way. If applicable, when someone is ready, that person will ask you about Islam and seek your help in becoming the best Muslim they can be, God willing. Or perhaps they’ll be more open to listening to your sincere, gentle advice on something you’re truly concerned about because of your love for them. This perspective does not mean we do not advise others when we’re concerned for them, it simply means we do so while withholding judgment and in a methodically wise way.

Be like the Prophet ﷺ. Engulf your heart so deeply in caring for people’s happiness in both worlds that it simply does not have space for judgment or arrogance. And perhaps, because of your sincere acceptance of another, you’ll soon find that very person being a means of guidance for your own self.

4 TIPS FOR RETURNING OUR HEARTS TO ALLAH

4 TIPS FOR RETURNING OUR HEARTS TO ALLAH

4 TIPS FOR RETURNING OUR HEARTS TO ALLAH
I was driving home from an appointment yesterday and something happened.
It’s not the first time it has happened, and it probably won’t be the last.
There was much on my mind, and even though I knew exactly what route I needed to take, I looked up and realized I had driven far past the place where I was supposed to turn.
Coupled with that realization was the question: Where was I?
Many of us have experienced such instances—we are driving or walking somewhere, and then our minds start to wander and we suddenly realize we have no idea where we are. These moments can be startling, and one might wonder, “What on earth could have distracted me so much?”
When we find ourselves in unfamiliar physical surroundings we follow relatively simple, logical steps to get ourselves back on track. After recognizing that we’re lost, we use whatever resources are available to us (people, maps, GPS enabled devices) to figure out where we need to go. Then we physically start moving in the right direction.

Similarly on the journey to Allah, there are times when we simply have no idea where we are. Allah has shown us the route we are supposed to take, but sometimes it is our hearts, rather than our minds, that get distracted. We miss a “spiritual” turn and as a result, our hearts get thrown off their route. We feel lost, our path blurred and our destination unclear
When we find ourselves lost on the journey to Allah we need to know how to help get our hearts back on track. The heart is a subtle, amazing creation of Allah, and therefore, helping it get back on the right path may not be as simple as following a few logical steps. Those who have journeyed on the path to Allah before us tell us that it requires determination and persistence, but the end result is well worth the effort.
Where, then, should we begin?

1. BEGIN WITH ALLAH ALMIGHTY
Allah promises He will guide us, but we have to begin with Him
When we find ourselves distant from Allah, we wonder how we ever got there. We could ask probably to spend a lot of time figuring this out, understanding what it is that distracted us from our path. But this information, albeit useful, will not really help us at the beginning.
Paradoxically, the most important place to begin when we feel distant from Allah is with Allah. This seeming paradox is part of the profound nature of the relationship Allah has with His slaves. We should turn to Allah, sincerely and humbly, and ask for His help and forgiveness. Allah promises He will guide us, but we have to begin with Him. This turning or returning to Allah is achieved through the process of tawbah (repentance).
Often times we think of tawbah as something we should do only after we have committed some huge sin. But tawbah is much more than that. It can simply mean redirecting our hearts towards Allah after they have been directed elsewhere, redirecting our energies to His worship or purifying our intentions for Him more frequently.
Why is this necessary?
Because this tawbah, this return, is the essence of the struggle and of the journey itself. This tawbahis what gives us the energy to start moving and the momentum to keep doing so. Allah tells us in numerous places that He will guide those who seek Him.
And, “Indeed, Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].”
(Quran 13:27)
Allah also tells us in a hadith qudsi that He will come running to those who begin moving toward Him. Thus, we have to first turn to Allah and recognize our absolute reliance on Him.  It may seem like a subtle movement of our hearts, but it opens the door for the journey ahead.
2. LOOK FOR LANDMARKS
As we journey with our hearts to Allah, we need to follow the guidance He has laid out for us.
Allah Almighty tells us that there are signs for us everywhere as we journey through life.
“There are many Signs on earth for those of sure faith, and also in your own selves. Do you not see?”
(Quran 51:20-1)
Too often, however, we get caught up in our daily routines, and we fail to see the signs Allah has put around us. This is especially true when our hearts are distant from Allah. We fail to realize that everything that happens to us, every person we meet, every thought we think and every word we hear or utter is by the decree of Allah. In all of this are signs.
It is extremely useful to step back from our busy lives and look for “landmarks” that tell us about where our hearts have strayed. What people, places or things have affected our path? Did a new relationship, responsibility, or job cause us to lose sight of our journey to Allah? Did some sort of wealth, power, or status take pull too strongly on our hearts and cause them to deviate?
The answers to such questions can often help us create a map for our hearts—an outline of what we should keep doing and what we should avoid.
3. START MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
In the physical world, a map does little to help us if we just sit and blankly stare at it. We have to process what the map tells us and start moving in the direction it tells us to.
Often we procrastinate, saying we’ll start the process “tomorrow,” or “later”.
As we journey with our hearts to Allah, we need to follow the guidance He has laid out for us. When we get lost or distracted, sometimes we can figure out what we need to do to get back on track; but rather than do it, we just sit. Our nafs (inner self) feel heavy and our hearts get restless because they are unable to move in the right direction.
Often we procrastinate, saying we’ll start the process “tomorrow,” or “later”. The only problem with this is that later may never come. Recently we prayed janazah in our community on a man who had just the day before said good-bye to his mother and gone out of the house only to die in a car accident a few hours later. His “later” never came, and ours is not guaranteed either.
So we should immediately turn to Allah and start back on the journey to Him. We may live many years and be given the chance to get closer and closer to Allah with our hearts and actions, but if Allah decrees otherwise for us, then at least we will meet Him having begun to change for the better.
Allah tells us:
“Every soul shall taste death.”
(29:57)
But seldom do we use this reality to change how we go about the minutes, hours and days we spend in this life.
If we knew the exact moment at which we would depart from this world, we would probably be a lot less distracted on our journey. Some of us might make more effort to worship Allah and make sure that no time was wasted. Others of us might give up those bad habits or sinful actions that we know would displease Allah and repent from them. Still others of us would spend more time purifying our intentions in all things and ensuring that our hearts were directed toward Allah.
Maybe we want to do all of these things, but maybe sometimes we’re afraid to admit it. The reality, though, is that we all have things we need to work on.
We all have worship that we need to increase and perfect.
We all have things we need to repent from.
We all have spots on our hearts that need to be polished before we present them to Allah.
So why are we waiting until it’s too late?
4. BE CONSISTENT
Rather than try to fix everything we want to fix overnight, we should choose one area…
Sometimes when we feel the burden of changing is just too great, we begin to doubt if we can do it at all. When this occurs, we should remind ourselves that all we are asked to do is start, even if our start is small. Rather than try to fix everything we want to fix overnight, we should choose one area where we can improve and try our best to be consistent in our progress. So if our prayer is a mess, we should address this. However, we should focus on making small, consistent improvements rather than try to fix everything at once.
Once we’ve become consistent in one area, we should begin doing more. As we strive to improve, we should remember to often ask Allah for help and not get deterred if we slip. We should surround ourselves with people who remind us of Allah, and when we do make a mistake, which undoubtedly we will, follow it with an act of goodness and repent to Allah sincerely.
Amazingly, one of the hadiths that remind us of how happy Allah is when we return to Him, evokes the same feelings and emotions that one of us would have when we are lost and then find our way. The Prophet Muhammad tells us:
“Allah is happier about the repentance of one His slaves, than one of you would be about finding your camel which had strayed away from you in the middle of the desert.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim, 15)
Undoubtedly, we would feel lost in the middle of the desert without a mount—it’s the same sort of feeling we have now when we find we’ve missed our turn because we got distracted on our way. And as happy as we might feel when we figure out how to find our way, Allah is happier than that when we return to Him and repent.
May Allah grant us all the resolve to reroute our hearts towards Him and the patience and persistence on our journey that will allow us to arrive at jannah in both this world and the next.
